Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the most popular application of our amazing new state-of-the-art laser machines, providing a convenient alternative to shaving or waxing.  In a very short treatment, hair follicles are destroyed which prevents further growth.  A course of 3-6 treatments is normally required for maximum results, so that all hair follicles are destroyed (as each laser treatment will target those hairs in the active growth phase).

While the underarms, legs and bikini are popular options, the machine is also very successful with "problem" hair issues such as in-growing hairs, female facial hair or excessive bodily hair in men.  Whatever your concern, our expert staff will provide sensible advice and a FREE test patch so that you can experience what laser hair removal feels like.

How does it work?

The thin beam of laser targets the hair follicle at the root of the treatment area. As soon as contact has been made the hair follicle is destroyed.

faqFrequently Asked Questions - Laser Hair Removal

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?

Following the treatment, you can return to your normal activities right away, but some redness may occur. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. In addition, your nurse may recommend that you use a specially formulated skin care product line or prescribe a skin care regimen especially formulated for your skin type.

What are the possible side effects?

Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. You will have a patch test prior to any treatment.

How does laser compare with other hair removal methods?

Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. Laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction for lasting results.  It is also much faster and less tedious than electrolysis, as the laser can cover a large area and works in far fewer treatments.  The machine can be used safely and effectively on patients with light or dark skin as well as tanned skin and can treat the fine hair on a woman’s upper lip just as easily and effectively as the coarse hair on a man’s back.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

When the pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. However, this is generally quite minimal.  A patch test will enable you to feel what treatment will be like before undertaking a course.

How many treatments will I need?

Most areas require 3-6 treatments. However, the number of treatments required does vary depending on factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs grow actively at the same time. Laser hair removal treatments work by disabling the hair that is in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

What happens after the treatment?

Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not regrowing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave if necessary.

Where can I get laser treatments?

Advanced laser therapy treatments are currently available in our Sheffield and Dublin and Galway clinics only - Birmingham coming in Jan 2010, with further clinics to receive laser machines during 2010.
